11/26/11 - Caramels

Now that Thanksgiving is done, it's time to make the caramels.  This is a yearly tradition that was spurred on by my lovely Aunt Cathy who makes the world's best caramels.  She used to send them every Christmas....well, she still does....just not to everyone.  Once I moved out of my Mother's house I no longer got to have any caramels at Christmastime.

A life without homemade caramels....no thank you!  About 9 years ago I decided to start making them myself and let me tell you, it was one of the best and worst decision I've ever made.

  1. Caramels evoke numerous memories -- of course, deliciousness is #1. Cutting waxed paper together and wrapping, wrapping, wrapping. Shopping for unique containers together. Deliciousness again! Going out (was it Christmas Eve?) shopping for the perfect pot -- thank you, Martha Stewart -- and noticing a sociology lesson at K-marts in diverse locations around Pasadena, CA. Figuring out the calories and including a label indicating that. And then deliciousness again and again!
