9/7/11 - New Teeth

When I was about 12 yrs old, my two front teeth were broken in half while playing baseball.  I was playing center field when a boy who would become my best friend hit a grounder that came right towards me.  As a kid I was often afraid of grounders...so as this grounder came my way I very distinctly recall hearing my father's voice telling me to run up on that ball.  So I did....the ball hit a bump in the ground and flew right up and hit me in the mouth and destroyed my two front teeth.  At the time I didn't know that they could fix that, so I was devastated.  Fortunately, fix it they did.  They put what I was told were temporary partials on those two front teeth.  I was supposed to get the teeth permanently capped when I was about 20 yrs old.

Well, time goes on and when I'm 20, I just don't have the funds to fix these teeth.  Then, 25....do any 25 yr olds have the funds for something like that?  Then 30.....nope....not yet.  Finally, at 35, I'm just afraid that the teeth aren't going to last much longer, so we decide that it doesn't matter that we don't have the funds....we're going to get these teeth fixed.

Now, today's photo is not of the finished product...just the temporary caps that they put there while the permanents are being made. I have to say...this was the most exhausting and painful dental visit of my life!  I was in the dentist chair for a little over 4 hours.  I was okay for about half of that time, but the 2nd two hours I was just ready to be done!

Here is the before and after.   Sorry about the poor quality iPhone photos.

  1. I remember how your friend thought we would sue them. And I remember how hurt and frightened you were. But you were well taken care of by our Reamstown dentist. So well taken care of that those temps lasted much longer than they were supposed to. No wonder you concentrated on gymnastics instead of baseball though.
